How to choose a name for your business

Your business name will repeat itself thousands of times — on invoices, in Google, on phone calls. Getting it wrong costs money to change later.

Your business name is the single biggest branding decision you will make — and it deserves more time than most people give it. It will repeat everywhere: on the invoice, in Google results, on every phone call.

Practical criteria

  • Easy to say and spell — someone who hears it on a call can write it correctly first time.
  • Available as a domain and as a handle on social media.
  • Not confusingly close to an existing competitor's name.
  • Not locked to one service alone, if you plan to expand later.

Common mistakes

  • A name that is hard to pronounce for the sake of sounding sophisticated.
  • A generic name that does not differentiate, like "The Best" or "Pro".
  • Choosing a name before checking whether the domain is even available.
If someone could easily misspell your name after hearing it, you will lose customers who cannot find you on Google.
