What is brand voice, and why does it matter?
The same sentence can be written ten different ways. The way you choose is your brand voice — and it shapes customer trust more than you'd expect.
The same marketing message can be written very formally, very warmly, or boldly and direct. That choice is your "voice", and it is as much a part of your identity as the logo — just far less often given the same attention.
Why it matters
A customer reads your words before they meet you. If the tone shifts — formal in a post, casual replying to a comment — a customer feels they are dealing with different people, not one company.
How to define your voice
- Who is your customer? Younger audiences often suit a lighter, warmer tone; corporate buyers usually need more formality.
- What are you selling? A serious product, like legal services, needs a reassuring tone, not a playful one.
- How do you want people to feel about you? That question settles everything else.
Brand voice is not a random writing style. It is a deliberate decision, and once set it should repeat everywhere — the post, the reply to a customer, even an error message on the site.
Common questions
- Does the voice change between platforms?
- The style can flex slightly between platforms, but the underlying personality and values need to stay the same everywhere.
