What is brand positioning, exactly?
In a market with twenty competitors selling the same thing, positioning is what makes a customer pick you over anyone else.
Positioning answers one question: "why would a customer choose me specifically, out of everyone offering the same service?" If you cannot answer in one sentence, your business has no clear positioning.
Positioning is not a slogan
People often confuse positioning with a tagline. A tagline is the line that appears; positioning is the strategic decision that line is built on.
How to build a positioning
- Define your audience precisely — not "everyone", but exactly who.
- Name the problem of theirs you solve better than anyone else.
- Name what you offer that no one else offers in the same way.
If you could swap your name for a competitor's in the same ad and nobody would notice, you have a positioning problem.
Common questions
- Does positioning change over time?
- It can evolve as a business grows, but any change should be a deliberate, evidence-based decision — not drift.
