What are brand guidelines, and why every brand needs one
The file many businesses receive and never open again — until someone designs a post in the wrong colours. Brand guidelines are what prevent that.
Brand guidelines are the document that fixes exactly how your brand should appear: the precise colours (not "blue" — the exact code), the fonts, the clear space around the logo, and what is off-limits.
Why you need one even as a small business
- Any new designer follows the same rules instead of improvising.
- It saves time — no repeat argument over "this blue or that one?"
- It protects your identity from eroding over time as different people work on it.
What it should contain
- Exact colour codes (HEX/CMYK), not a written description.
- The typeface names and weights in use.
- Correct and incorrect examples of logo use.
- The minimum clear space required around the logo.
Without brand guidelines, any new designer draws your brand from their imagination — not from your rules.
