What is the marketing funnel, simply explained?

Not every visitor is ready to buy the first time they see you. The funnel is the path they walk from "hearing about you for the first time" to "actually buying".

Not every visitor is ready to buy the first time they see you. The funnel is the path they walk from "hearing about you for the first time" to "actually buying" — and understanding those stages changes how you market entirely.

The three stages

  • Top of funnel (TOFU): someone learns about you for the first time — awareness content, not a direct pitch.
  • Middle of funnel (MOFU): they know their problem and are looking at solutions — comparison and explanatory content fits here.
  • Bottom of funnel (BOFU): they are ready to decide — this is where offers and a direct call to action belong.

The most common mistake: pitching a direct sale to someone still at the top of the funnel who barely knows you exist. The result feels pushy, not convincing.

Marketing is not one step. It is a journey: they learn about you, they trust you, they buy from you.
