Why your logo doesn't stick — 5 common mistakes

Not every logo that "looks nice" is memorable. There is a difference between a beautiful logo and a working one — and it comes down to five common mistakes.

A logo that "looks nice" is not the same as a logo people remember. The difference comes down to simple mistakes that repeat across a lot of designs.

The five mistakes

  • Overcomplication: details that disappear once the logo shrinks to icon size.
  • Too many colours: more than two or three makes a logo hard to recall.
  • Illiterate type: a font that is too "artistic" sacrifices clarity.
  • Trend-copying: logos in the same industry that all look alike because everyone copied the same style.
  • No testing at different sizes: a logo that looks great large and turns into a blur small.

The simple test

Shrink the logo to profile-picture size (roughly 32×32 pixels) and look at it. If it is no longer clear, there is a design problem to fix before you use it anywhere.

A complex logo, too many colours, hard-to-read type — these are why you are not remembered.
